Purbayan Chatterjee's training began early under his illustrious father, Pt. Partha Chatterjee. In recent times he has been receiving taalim from Ustad Ali Akbar Khan. Under his gurus' guidance he has developed into one of the finest young sitar players today. His playing is very reminiscent of the legendary Pt. Nikhil Banerjee, borrowing the best of the dhrupad and khayal styles. He has performed in almost all the major music festivals in India as well as in several prestigious international festivals. He is also the recipient of several awards, among them the President's award, the Rotary award and the Pt. Ravi Kichlu award.
